Happy Blogversary!!!

As you probably all know by know, today, November 18th, is my 4 year Blogversary!

I've never done anything big like this before, mostly because I've not really done anything else on my blog in the past? so obviously this is new! I don't have much planned other than I wanted to answer the questions you asked me. And if they'll stop getting sidetracked discussing various weapons, I have a few girls here to do a quick interview about their stories and their hIsToRy! So some fun stuffs coming up!

Q&A

-Favorite movie?
My favorite movie at this point in time is Polycarp, although Call of the Wild and Catching Fire are close seconds.

-Favorite genre of books? (SUB FANTASY GENRE)
To read? My favorite genre (other than fantasy) would have to be sci-fi. I also have started liking the couple of books that are a fantasy/sci-fi mashup, like the Children of the Bard series by Bryan Davis and the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyers. It's probably the same for writing.

-What's your favorite Bible verse?
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." -Isaiah 40:29-31

-How do you feel about the Olympics?
How I do feel about the Olympics? ... Is something happening to the Olympics that I don't know about? I don't really follow the Olympics' news these days. I'm more invested in what's happening in the chess world. Are you saying I should go to the Olympics? I don't think I'd even make it to qualifiers anymore.

-What's on your 2024 TBR?
Most of the same stuff that's been on my TBR for the past year, because I've been completely derailing from it for the most part. A few highlights:
-Echo of the Fae by Jenelle Leanne Schmidt (I own it... I just need to read it)
-The Silmarilion by J.R.R. Tolkein (I've started it 3 times and have never gotten past three chapters...)
-Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wayne Jones (I keep telling myself I need to read it before the Silmaril awards, bc there's always a Howl character in the top five... I never have succeeded)
-plus others I'm not certain of where I'll be in the series by the calendar flip, so they won't be mentioned.

-Any ideas what you're going to write next?
Well, after I finish A Word Unbroken, I'll be editing The Last Phoenix to get it ready for pitching at Realm Makers next summer!!!!! For new stories, however, I'll probably be working on the next installment of the Black Crystal Trilogy (the series AWU is book 1 of), currently being called A Fight Unfinished.

-Can you share a snippet from your WIP?
In my Know the Novel part 2 post earlier this week, I included several snippets. You can hop over there and see WIP galore. But because I'm nice, here's another tidbit for you:

Elly ran a hand through her hair as she stared at him. “The revolution here. Everything that’s chasing Ryder and the other two. The Gazebo. The dragons. It’s all connected.”

“All of it,” Ollyn repeated. “And I need to know who he is. He killed my dad. He’s hurt Wren and Dabe and me deeper than I think we know. He’s tearing apart Qaris.”

He met her gaze, his dark eyes darkening further as he readied himself to say the words that he’d sworn that first day he quit speaking. “I’m going to kill him.”

-What is your best tip for combating writer's block?

Keep pushing through. Taking a break, moving on to somet

hing else, all the stuff I used to do, it doesn't actually help. It makes me discouraged and completely detached from that story, and I'll never come back to it. So just keep going. You might write crap. I certainly do. But it'll come back, and you can fix it up during the editing process.

So that's what I have question-wise! Hope you enjoyed that. Anyways, moving on. I managed to get the girls to calm down enough to have a conversation with them.

Please welcome Tanny, Winera, Ariel, Perpetua, and Serwrenna!!!

(some of the artwork is a little old but i'm lazy so i didn't make any new stuff)

Me: so, girls. Which of you five is the oldest?
Serwrenna: Hello, hi, that would be me. I'm the oldest.
Perpetua: Sorry, I think we're the same age.
Tanny: I think she meant which of us is the oldest created character, which would be me.
Me: Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. But yes, Pet, you and Wren are both sixteen.
Winera: Wait, they get to be sixteen, and I'm stuck at fourteen? I've existed a lot longer than either of them.
Tanny: Ha, well, I'm only twelve. You can only cry so much.
Me: I'm in a different phase for ages with them than I was when I was writing you two. But that doesn't matter. Both of you do plenty at your ages. Anyways, Tanny, as my first character ever, tell us a little about your story.
Tanny: ...
Me: ...
Tanny: What story?
Me: You-your story? The thing I'm writing about you?
Tanny: You scratched my story a few years back and are now claiming you'll write the new one very soon. Except that story focuses on someone named Kathy. Wrong name, Kal. I think--
Me: Okayyyy, someone's bitter. Let's move away from telling about stories. How about a round of what-would-you-do?
Perpetua: You just don't want us blabbing about all the stuff you aren't writing, do you?
Me: ...
Perpetua: ...
Winera: ...
Ariel: SO! What-would-you-do?
Me: Ah, yes. Um. You all have a fellow main character, a male companion, so to speak. Let's say he'd fallen in a river and was drowning. What would you do?
Perpetua: Scream and cry because it's Kalleb, and he can shape-shift into a fish, so why is he drowning?
Winera: Laugh at him until Sikito tells me to jump in and save him.
Me: What if it is Sikito?
Winera: ... jump in and save him without hesitating.
Tanny: See, my guy is Ben, and Ben would punch me if I tried to save him, so I'd let him drown.
Winera: Seriously? You'd rather let him drown than get punched?
Tanny: Are you kidding? I was making a joke! Of course I'd save him.
Ariel: If it's Wilson, jump in and save him.
Me: If it's Maximus...?
Ariel: Jump in and save him.
Winera: There're piranhas in the water.
Ariel: Jump in and save him.
Serwrenna: It's raining acid...
Ariel: Jump--
Me: Okay, let's stop making this terrible for Ariel. Wren, what would you do?
Serwrenna: I mean, if it's Kel, I'd save him in a heartbeat, although he'd probably get mad and tell me how I endangered myself. If it's Dabe, I'd just laugh at him and let Alith save him.
Winera: Really?
Serwrenna: ... no. I'd save him. He'd probably dunk me, though.
Me: Well then, next question. You have a chance to go back in time and stop your villain before your story happens. Would you?
Ariel: No.
Tanny: Yes.
Winera: Yes.
Perpetua: That means I would go back like five hundred years... no.
Serwrenna: Which villain?
Me: Hakkyn.
Serwrenna: Um. Yes. If I was alone, I would.
Me: I can see Winera getting ready to ask something that will take us into a very dark conversation, so let's move on. If you could pair up with one character from a different story than yours, who would you choose and why?
Ariel: Emma Grant.
Me: From a story represented by one of these five girls.
Ariel: Oh. Um.
Winera: I suppose Kathy from Niinia. From what I've heard, we sound similar, and I think we would be unstoppable. You know, with her lightning and my skills.
Serwrenna: Kalleb. You have a great man, Pet. He just sounds like someone I'd want at my side.
Perpetua: Why, thank you. I was just about to say Andre from your story for basically the same reasons. Except I wouldn't have to worry about keeping him alive as hard core.
Ariel: Tanny. I want Tanny at my side. We can watch each other's backs, and she's basically a smuggler.
Tanny: I was about to say Lyra, but I might switch it over to you now. Thank you. That means a lot.
Me: Alright, girls, thanks so much! I'm glad I can pull together a group who doesn't want to kill each other the whole time. Do y'all have anything else to say before we wrap up the post?
Serwrenna: Thanks for reading through all this chaos, everyone! We are embodiments of chaos, every one of us, so it has to CrAzY, but you still keep reading!
Perpetua: It's been discouraging, wanting to get our stories out there for people to start getting excited about but not having many people really interested. It means a lot that you care about us enough to keep coming back to this Place.
Ariel: I know we don't always make sense, but we're trying hard to make this an enjoyable area. Please keep coming back. It's been an amazing four years of helping Kal create posts for your enjoyment, and a little less amazing in the points where we poke her into posting more, and we don't want that to stop anytime soon.
Winera: Not wanting to brag, but I'm basically the reason this blog became a thing. It's been hard, like Pet said, to want to post when there aren't many people reading the posts, especially since we don't have any platforms to advertise on, so I-- we-- are thankful for each and every one of you readers. Thank you so so so so so so so so so so so so much for reading all this chaos. Please keep coming back!
Tanny: As Kal's earliest character, I've never had much publicity, so the fact that she's letting me say this is great. It's been four years of Kal struggling to find her pace in writing. With me as the exception, all of the other four girls were created in this time period. I've sat on the sidelines watching all these new ideas take flight and knowing that one day something big is going to happen with them. That's still in the works, of course, but having people read her blog has been giving Kal confidence to keep going. I know everyone's said it already, but please keep reading! You reading her little flashes of chaos on the weekends is helping her remember why she loves writing in the first place. So please, keep coming back. Help us have another amazing four years of crafting worlds.

Like the girls all said, thank you so much for reading along with all my crazy. It really means so much to me, and I can't wait to see what happens next in this Place of Chaos!

thanks for reading! byeeeee

Writing Stuffs: Know the Novel pt 2

Yes, I published a few days early, that was intentional! Remember, the 18th is my blogversary, and I want to do a Q&A! If you have any last minute questions for me, pleeeease get them in so I'll be able to see and answer them in time for this Saturday!

anyways back to business.

Alright, alright, alright...

It's that time of the month again.

Knowwww the Novel part 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So let's jump right into it!!!

For those who don't know what Know the Novel is, here's a quick explanation:
Know the Novel is a 3-part tag for writers, one for each of these last three months of the year. Each part will feature ten questions you can answer on your own blog (or anywhere else on social media!). The questions will be focusing on different parts of your novel and how the writing is progressing.
This tag was created by Christine Smith. Check out her blog to find out more about the tag and see other authors' WIP.

Let's get starteeeeeeeeeeeeeeed.

1. How’s the writing going overall?

So far, so good! I randomly decided about a week ago to add in a new part to the plot that wasn't supposed to be important... but it is important. So that very much happened, buuuut other than that it's great!

2. What’s been the most fun aspect about writing this novel so far?

The most fun aspect...? Ah. Um. Well. Um. I guess I'll say just figuring out what's happening at all. The plot. Has CHANGED. AT LEAST THIRTY TIMES. >_< halp

3. What do you think of your characters at this point? Who’s your favorite to write about?

The characters?

OH YEAH THE CHARACTERS ARE FINEEEEEEEEE. DEFINITELY NOT GETTING KIDNAPPED. DEFINITELY NOT THREATENING EACH OTHER TO STOP KIDNAPPING THE SMOL CHILDREN. DEFINITELY NOT---

stopping now.

ahem.

I like my characters and everything about them. They are great. They are super cool. They are some of my favorite cast that doesn't just cause chaos everywhere although they do cause plenty of chaos so I do like my characters.

My favorite to write is... mmm, either Kel or Dabe. Dabe is in the category of "fun-to-write" whereas Kel is in the category of "WHY-DO-I-DO-THIS-TO-MY-HUMANS" and he's very... challenging to write (in a good way).

btw I made a post about all my characters, check it out here

4. Has your novel surprised you in any way?

As I said above, the plot has changed at least thirty times, and some of those changes I'm not sure are for the best??? So I have been very surprised with several twists and changes that have thrown themselves at me, but mostly in a good way. I've also been surprised by a character who decided she wasn't planning on chilling in the background and was going down and dirty. I did enjoy that greatly.

5. Have you come across any problem areas?

Problem areas? Well, I was stuck in one chapter for a while, but that was mostly because it was right in the middle of school crazy and other stuff, so it wasn't so much that the section itself was a "problem area" and just that I couldn't get past it because of tiiiiime. Other than that, no problem areas, really.

6. What’s been your biggest victory with writing this novel at this point?

*big breath*

I HIT 60K WORDS AND I'VE REACHED 200 PAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

obviously that isn't super duper long, and it's probably gonna be a bit longer, but all of my other stories have ended either at 99 pages (that actually happened >_<) or maybe 150. SO THE FACT THAT I'M GETTING SO FAR ALONG HAS MADE ME SO FREAKIN' HAPPYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

*lets out breath*

I'm also really happy because I finally reached the section that made me want to keep writing this novel at a point where I was debating stopping. (so I guess there was a problem area, I just don't remember where it was) I am veryyyyy happy right now!

7. If you were transported into your novel and became any one of the characters, which one do you think you’d be? Would you take any different actions than they have?

AHH I DON'T WANT TO BE ONE OF MY CHARACTERS. I'd probably end up being Alith, if I was in there, because she's the one who's the most "normal" in a sense... Would I take any different actions? I wouldn't have punched Garrin... actually maybe I would...? I don't think I would've done anything differently than what she does. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8. Give us the first sentence or paragraph then 2 (or 3!) more favorite snippets!

Oh you want snippets now. I see how it is.

first bit:

Serwrenna thrust her heavy broadsword forward, lodging it deep in the bark of a nearby pine tree. She tugged on it, but the blade wouldn’t budge. She glanced to the side as her opponent approached, his own sword ready to strike.

She made the split second decision to drop her sword’s hilt and drew one of the small throwing knives always sheathed on her belt for crises.

Her enemy, a tall brute with small glittering black eyes, bared his teeth at her in a vile grin. “You think you can stop me with that?”

Serwrenna flicked her attention at the small blade for a split second, easily dancing out of the way on nimble feet as the ruffian lunged at her. She let out a quiet tsk-tsking sound and shook her head in a slow, mocking way. Stall a little longer, hse thought. Letting a lofty lilt spice her words, she responded, “My sir, I have stopped many a large person with a simple knife. I know I can stop you.”

and now for a few others....

Garrin didn’t waver. “Well, I’m afraid your concerns were unprecedented, because I have everything sorted out already.” He allowed his gaze to roam around the area, refusing to blink even though the rain was coming down harder. “So if you’ll kindly remove your men, we can continue business as usual.”

“I’m afraid I cannot do that, Director,” was the answer. Hakkyn’s features were all scrunched together in mock apology, except his eyes which gleamed dangerously. “My business with you specifically is drawing to a close unless the insurgents I have now repeatedly mentioned are brought here.”

_______________________________________________________

“Last question. Why is your hair so short?”

Alith ran a hand along her shorn locks, frowning slightly. The longest strands brushed the tip of her chin while the shortest tickled just below her ears. She didn’t think it was so much shorter than Serwrenna’s; it was just choppier. “It won’t get caught in machinery or anything this length.”

“And it won’t fly in her face while moving quickly either,” Kel added, materializing behind her.

Alith jumped at his sudden appearance and turned to him, her frown turning playful. “How long were you listening?”

“Just long enough to hear them asking about your hair.” He reached over and plucked the remainder of her breakfast from the table in front of her. “If we’re on the topic of length, why is your hair so long, Dabernell?”

Serwrenna smirked at her brother. “Yeah, Dabernell.

Dabe’s face once more took on the color of a ripe tomato, and he scowled at his sister, also fingering his chin length strands of hair. “It makes me look dashing.”

Ellythian snorted. “Who’re you kidding, Dabe, it makes you look rumpled.”

Dabernell glared at her before turning to Ollyn, who was silently snickering. “Stop laughing at my hair!”

_______________________________________________________

Dabe replaced his hat and stalked toward them. “Hey! Let her go.”

Alith turned toward him, her eyes wide and angry. “Dabe. I said no talking.”

“I’m bad at listening.” Dabe waited until the stranger faced him. “Let her go.” He laid a hand on his knife’s hilt, waiting.

The man stepped away from Alith, lifting his hands. “I wasn’t going to hurt her, kid.”

“Kid?” Dabe snorted. “I don’t think I’m a whole lot younger than you.”

Alith stepped to his side, hooking her arm through his. “Dabe, this is Andre. He’s…” she hesitated, frowning. “He was our friend.”

“Was?” Andre crossed his arms. “That hurts, Alith.”

“I’m so not sorry.”

__________________________________________________________

“I want you to come with me. There’s plenty to do, so you wouldn’t be bored. And maybe we…” he trailed off. “Never mind. It’ll be somewhere safe where I can show you more of my world.” He reached for her again, this time taking her hand for real. “Please.”

She stared at their linked hands, her heart fluttering in that way she refused to acknowledge. “I don’t want to leave Treridon.”

“It won’t be easy,” Kel agreed, “but I have to ask, is it really home anymore?”

Wren closed her eyes against a sudden surge of tears. “It might not be welcoming, but it will always be home.”

“It’s time to move on now.” Kel took a deep breath before releasing her hand and stepping back, turning aside as well. “For both of us.”

9. Share an interesting tidbit about the writing process so far! (For example: Have you made any hilarious typos? Derailed from your outline? Killed off a character? Changed projects entirely? Anything you want to share!)

Oh. Well, if someone died, why would I say anything about it, hm? I don't remember my funny typos enough to put them here, although there was one time I was trying to write "tapestry" and ended up with "pastry"...  I don't even remember why I was writing tapestry in the first place???

10. Take us on a tour of what a normal writing day for this novel looks like. Where do you write? What time of day? Alone or with others? Is a lot of coffee (or some other drink) consumed? Do you light candles? Play music? Get distracted by social media (*cough, cough*)? Tell all!

By now, I have commandeered one of my big sisters' desks, so that's my general writing nook. I've been doing most of my long writing sessions around 9-10:30... And usually alone, because I'm becoming a smol, lonely, introverted writing bean. I have fInAlLy been allowed to start drinking coffee regularly, buuuut only if I drink it in the morning hours... so it hasn't contributed to my novel at all. I've been playing music; I made a full playlist for A Word Unbroken that I have been listening to.... a lot. And social media... I've gotten distracted by Harry Potter and Star Wars memes on Pinterest a little too much sometimes... but no other social media. So my writing life has really been coming out at night, which is a new phenomenon for me. I've gotten maybe a paragraph in during five minute breaks in classes or whatever, but yeah.

So that's Know the Novel Part 2! Hope you enjoyed! Check out the original post at Christine's blog! Thanks for bearing with me!!

bye
